Press Release: UICC Reach to Recovery
4th March 2011
A campaign aimed at raising awareness about breast cancer in Nigeria is set to be launched in Benin City, in the country's mid-west at the end of March.
The Elizabeth Igbinoba Breast Cancer Foundation will conduct an awareness campaign 25 - 30 March 2008 in memory of Elizabeth Ojo-Igbinoba from Benin City, who died from breast cancer two years ago on the 27 March 2006 at the age of 55.
Mr. Hubert Igbinoba, Elizabeth’s son will be joined by Dr. Mrs. Kofoworola Orija, the Founder and Executive Director of The Bloom Cancer Care & Support Centre based in Lagos and the Medical Women’s Association of Nigeria – Edo State.
The major focus of the current breast cancer campaign is to educate people, namely women, in Benin City about the disease and how early detection is essential to increasing the number of survivors.
"I want to help women better understand the importance of detecting breast cancer in its early stages, and how and where they can go to be treated in order to increase their chances of survival” said Mr. Igbinoba.
"Doctors treating my mother in the capital Abuja told me that had my mother been aware of her situation earlier, she could have survived and therefore I owe it to my mother and other women in Benin City to help stop this disease from claiming more lives," he added.
At EIBCF we are aware that the Nigerian Government and existing Breast Cancer organizations are actively developing breast cancer awareness, treatment and prevention strategies, but we believe there is still much to be done!
